Today's History Lesson is about Rights

Two very important events took place today in history. Both of them dealt with the inherent rights of the people of this earth and of this country (US). These fights are not over and still we see these issues arise.

1. In 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, violating a city segregation law, Kicking off the Montgomery Bus Boycott and fueling the fire for civil rights movements across the US.

The fight for equality had been met with the bludgeon of government. It had met the idea that people of this earth were to remain unequal by law and by thought. The Movement to be seen as equals raged on for years, never really ending.

Eventually the movement reached a height in Washington D.C. with the "I have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

2. In 1969 the United States Government used a lottery system to conscript citizens to participate in the Vietnam War. Thereby revoking rights of the people and subjecting unwilling people to fight and die for a government and its foreign policy.

Burning Draft Cards and Selective Service cards were normal, as was finding a way to defer service or escape this form of slavery.
Protesters against the War were also protesters against conscription.

The United States Government stated that they believed this lottery system "fair", what can be fair about forced service to an idea you despise?

In the case of the first anniversary, the fight for freedom rages on, and in the case of the second, so does the fight from tyranny.
